Health Technician (Hearing)

Specific duties include but are not limited to:
-Assisting medical and clinical staff with or performs diagnostic procedures used to diagnose medical conditions. -Assures that the patient is positioned for accurate and effective measurements and readings. -Demonstrates use, purpose and care of instruments and accompanying accessories. -Locates and sets up equipment and accessories and understands proper positioning. -Operates and maintains medical instruments. -Schedules procedures, coordinating with other services. -Maintains administrative and clinical files. -Orders and maintains supplies for the unit, to include specialized supplies pertaining to instruments used in the unit. -Provides orientation and training to staff regarding equipment and instruments. -Receives and directs patients, answers routine inquiries and makes referrals. -Receives and responds to inquiries from patients concerning a variety of medical, personnel, and administrative matters. -Determines nature of inquiry and responds to administrative questions. -Obtains release forms. -Assists patients, visitors, and other requesting information, guidance or referral for special assistance. -Conducts preliminary interview with patients being seen for audiometric assessment to include completing histories and surveys of hearing handicap. -Assists speech pathology staff by preparing patients for specialized speech language procedures such as modified barium swallows and assisting with tracheoeschopageal patients. -Conducts preliminary interviews with patient being seen for various speech, language, voice, or swallowing disorders. -Explains procedures and positions to patients for a variety of difficult procedures such as making ear mold impressions, hearing aid fittings and adjustments. -Inspects the pinna and opening to the external auditory meatus for presence of cerumen and debris that will interfere with audiometric testing and/or making of ear mold impressions. -Makes impression of the ear canal for ear molds or custom in-the-ear hearing aids. -Prepares ear molds for shipping and mails the ear mold together with the hearing aid order to the vendor. -Collets data, transcribes language samples, and performs clerical duties such as scheduling and preparing speech-language-swallowing materials. -Instructs patients in the proper use, care, and safety measures for effective use of hearing aids and assistive listening devices. -Provides follow-up care instructions and demonstrations for patients. -Performs troubleshooting checks upon malfunctioning hearing instruments. -Performs routine and advanced electro acoustical analysis of hearing aids on hearing test equipment for audiologist to review. -Resets the fitting parameters of programmable hearing aids that have been returned from the manufacturers for repair. -Provides clerical and administrative support to the program including receptionist duties, checking in patients, and maintaining patient records. -Schedule appointments and tests and coordinates for the clinical area, avoiding conflicts in patient treatment plans. -Answers telephone inquiries regarding services available and procedures for admission. -Manages the entry of hearing aid order using automated systems. -Maintains loner and stock hearing aid inventories for the clinic. -Maintains supply of materials and assistive listening devices. -Documents patient care activity in the patient's clinic records and the electronic medical record for the facility. -Performs other related duties as assigned. The work is primarily sedentary but also requires some standing, walking, bending, lifting, and carrying of light items. The work requires above average agility and dexterity. The work may require heavy lifting of equipment or patients. Work Environment:
Involves risks typically associated with performance facility work. Work involves regular and recurring exposure to moderate risks or discomforts, such as communicable diseases, some verbal and or physical abuse from emotionally disturbed patients and distraught visitors that require special safety precautions. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Possession of current American Heart Association (AHA) and Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) is highly desirable and preferred. Specialized
Experience:
One (1) full year of specialized experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skill, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the Health Technician position, and that is in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-5 level in the Federal service to qualify at the Grade-6. Examples of specialized experience include (but are not limited to):
Proven direct patient care activities; proven ability to observe, perceive, use judgment, show initiative, and pay meticulous attention to detail; proven applied knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology; experience taking and recording vital signs; proven ability to operate specialized equipment and instruments; basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology associated with normal and disordered hearing and swallowing and voice production anatomy; ability to schedules appointments and records information into an electronic medical record system; skill in utilizing the computer for data entry and tracking; and providing general clerical/administrative support coordination work in a medical unit. Note:
As a general rule education is not qualifying in this occupation at the GS-6 grade level. Graduate level education or an internship may meet the specialized experience required above the GS-5 grade level only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the Health Technician position. If utilizing education or internship to qualify for this position, transcripts and or certification of internship must be provided with your application package. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
