Essential Functions:
Supervise all residents within the secure detention area which includes patrolling the facility frequently to ensure security and order are maintained, conducting head counts, escorting residents to meals, classrooms, and other programs, and delivering food and medication to residents as prescribed, directed, and authorized by detention center medical staff.
Obtains juvenile residents' compliance with rules and regulations and manages dangerous and unruly residents as necessary.
Writes disciplinary action for resident rule infractions.
Conducts thorough searches of residents, mail, property, rooms, pod areas, and other common areas as directed by a shift supervisor for prohibited items such as weapons, drugs, or other contraband.
Assists in maintaining proper personal care and hygiene of residents Responds to critical incidents such as juvenile assaults on staff or other residents, population disturbances, or any situation threatening the security of the facility and thoroughly documents these incidents once resolved.
Must have the ability to verbally deescalate and/or physically restrain an acting out juvenile when necessary in order to restore a safe and secure environment.
Responds quickly to calls for assistance in other areas of the center as directed by central control or the shift supervisor.
Aids in all emergency evacuations such as fires, gas leaks, natural disasters, etc.
, and ensures the safe evacuation of all residents and staff.
Receives new resident admissions into secure detention; Searches residents and advises them of the rules and regulations of secure detention.
Maintains and controls all keys and equipment during shift and that missing or nonfunctioning keys or equipment is promptly reported to a supervisor.
Attempts to modify resident behavior through one to one or group interaction Prepares and maintains logs, reports and records, resident charts, shift logs, disciplinary reports, incident reports, isolation tracking sheets, phase program updates, and other documentation as required.
Must have the ability to work all required shifts to ensure proper staffing levels for the secure detention area.
This will require the ability to work weekends and holidays.
Shifts or schedules may fluctuate based on need and may change from week to week.
Must have the ability to work additional hours when needed to ensure proper staffing levels.
This may require mandatory double shifts to cover emergencies, call-offs, or other attendance issues.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILL/ABILITY:
Ability to enforce rules fairly and firmly.
Ability to detect potential incidents and quickly respond to prevent or resolve critical incidents.
Ability to apply the use of physical force when necessary.
Ability to detect the early symptoms of common health problems.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Ability to maintain records and complete written reports.
Ability to operate personal computer equipment.
Ability to adapt to a fluctuating schedule based of facility need which includes mandatory additional hours/shift when necessary.
Ability to work well with others and use teamwork skills.
Must be physically capable of sitting, standing, walking, ascending and descending stairs for extended periods of time.
Lifting/carrying objects up to 50 lbs, pushing/pulling objects, crouching/kneeling, bending, reaching, handling/grasping objects.
Must be able to physically restrain aggressive and acting out residents.
